Emergency Stabilization in Johns Creek

When your pet is in a life-threatening situation, every second counts. Whether your dog has been hit by a car, your cat is struggling to breathe, or your pet has collapsed, you need a team that can act immediately.

At Ruby Veterinary Urgent Care in Johns Creek, our ER-trained veterinarians are equipped and experienced in emergency stabilization. We’re prepared to intervene, stabilize your pet, and coordinate transfer to a 24-hour facility for ongoing critical care when needed.

Emergencies We Stabilize

Our team is trained to stabilize any emergency that comes through our doors, including active bleeding from trauma, lacerations, or internal sources; active seizures or seizure clusters; difficulty breathing from any cause including allergic reactions, fluid in the lungs, or airway obstruction; hit-by-car injuries including fractures, internal bleeding, and shock; acute collapse from any cause including heart disease, internal bleeding, or severe dehydration; severe allergic reactions including anaphylaxis; and acute pain crises.

What Emergency Stabilization Means

Emergency stabilization is the critical first step in saving your pet’s life. It means restoring and maintaining vital functions, including airway, breathing, and circulation, while assessing the extent of injury or illness.

At Ruby, stabilization may include IV catheter placement and fluid therapy to treat shock and restore blood pressure, oxygen therapy to support breathing, emergency medications to stop seizures, manage pain, or address heart rhythm abnormalities, hemorrhage control through direct pressure, bandaging, or other interventions, rapid assessment diagnostics including X-rays, bloodwork, and a FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma) ultrasound to identify internal injuries, and warming or cooling protocols depending on the emergency.

Once your pet is stabilized, our veterinarian will discuss findings with you and, when 24-hour monitoring or surgical intervention is needed, coordinate a direct transfer to a nearby emergency hospital. We contact the receiving facility, provide all records and diagnostics, and ensure a seamless handoff so your pet receives uninterrupted care.

When to Come to Ruby vs. a 24-Hour ER

If your pet is in a life-threatening emergency, the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital is always the right choice for definitive care. They have the surgical capability, overnight monitoring, and ICU resources that critical patients often need.

However, emergencies don't wait for convenient timing. If your pet is in crisis during our operating hours (Mon–Fri 2–10 PM, Sat–Sun 10 AM–8 PM) and we happen to be the closest option, our ER-trained veterinarians can begin stabilization immediately while we coordinate transfer to a 24-hour facility if needed.

Our ER-trained veterinarians can begin stabilization immediately and coordinate a direct transfer to a 24-hour facility if your pet needs surgery, overnight hospitalization, or intensive care beyond our scope.

In an emergency, the worst option is waiting. If you're unsure where to go, call us at (470) 742-4620 on your way. We can help you decide whether to come to us or go directly to a 24-hour hospital based on your pet's situation.

Outside our operating hours, go directly to the nearest 24-hour emergency hospital.

What to Expect When You Arrive

When you arrive with a pet in crisis, our team triages immediately. We use an Emergency Authorization form that allows our veterinarians to begin stabilization treatment before full paperwork is completed.

Our veterinarian will communicate with you throughout the process, explaining what is being done and why. If transfer to a 24-hour facility is recommended, we will help you understand the reasons and coordinate the referral directly.
